My Fall Panchakarma

In Ayurveda the changing of the seasons is an important time to take care of your health. With the change your body needs to adjust to the new and get rid of the old to avoid getting sick. Traditional panchakarma practices are very rigorous and require specially trained Ayurvedic practitioners. I am doing a very simple home panchakarma which will hopefully clean out my system in preparation for the new season and weather. Last fall I did a guided detox with one of my teachers and this year I've decided to do one on my own. I definitely recommend doing a guided one the first time because you never know what is going to happen with your body while you are cleaning it out.

Natural Sunburn Remedies

For the past month Ollie and I have been taking or daily walks in the morning, around 6am, before the sun comes up. This morning it was pouring so we put our walk off until after my morning class. When we left the house it was cloudy and cooler compared to the weather we've been having. Halfway through our walk the sun came out, it started to get really hot, and I started to think about sunburn. I didn't put on sunscreen when I left the house because I knew I wouldn't be gone that long and I had on a big hat.

Food Combining Rules for Better Digestion

One of the biggest things I've learned from Ayurveda is about food combining. Until last year it never even occurred to me that there were some foods I shouldn't eat with other food, but it's changed so much for me.

Auromere Hair Products Review and Giveaway

I have been on the search for a great all natural shampoo and conditioner for the past year. I tried a number of different brands, only to be disappointed, until I tried Auromere. I love using their products and I especially love that my hair feels the same as it did when I was using my Dove shampoo and conditioner.

Introduction to Ayurveda: The Doshas

Back in February I wrote this post about The Elements as part of introducing Ayurveda to my readers. I got distracted by visitors, recipes, and being sick. But now I am ready to share more information with you about Ayurveda. Once we have an understanding of the five major elements: fire, water, earth, air, and ether we can explore the doshas.

Eat Taste Heal Cookbook Review

At the beginning of April I shared a recipe for Red Lentil Dhal from the cookbook Eat Taste Heal by Thomas Yarema, Daniel Rhoda, and Chef Johnny Brannigan. I love Eat Taste Heal so much that I want to give you a better idea of what the book covers and the types of recipes that are included.

Tea to Cure a Cold

Last week I shared the remedies I used to get rid of my sore throat. They worked but the next day I woke up with a cold: stuffy/runny nose, achy body, and a foggy mind. Since I successfully cured my sore throat with Ayurvedic remedies I started the search for some to cure my cold. I found this tea, which I've fallen in love with and will probably drink even when I'm not sick.

Sore Throat Remedy

This morning I woke up with a sore throat, it was so bad I could barely drink water. I'm not sure if it from allergies or the start of a cold. I found a few Ayurvedic remedies instead of turning to throat lozenges which tend to have a lot of sugar in them.

Introduction to Ayurveda: Part II The Elements

After knowing what ayurveda is the next step is to understand the five elements that make up the universe. The five elements are ether (space), air, fire, water, and earth. These five elements are see on the macro and micro level. We all know how the elements evolve on the marco level because we can see them in our every day lives. These same elements also make up our bodies because humans are the microcosm of the universe.

Introduction to Ayurveda

When I first heard the word Ayurveda I thought to myself ayur-what? However, since it related to yoga I wanted to explore what it.  Over the past year and a half I've been immersing myself in everything relating to ayurveda and integrating it into my life.

First of all, ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translated to "the science of life." It is the medical system from India that has very close ties to yoga. The system has been used in India for over 5000 years and is greatly respected in many cultures around the world.

Fall Detox: The Process and What I Learned

As I've mentioned in previous posts I've been doing an 18 day detox to help me transition from summer to colder temperatures.  The program is with my yoga teacher, Maria, and I am getting credit for doing the detox towards the next level of my yoga teacher training.  The detox is based on ayurvedic principles and works on many different levels of a person.

Zucchini Soup

This is another yummy end of summer dish! And it only takes a few ingredients.  It is based off the Luciano's Zucchini Soup in Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners. One little note I want to make is that this might not look appealing to all people but trust me it tastes delicious. If the soup is too thick for you feel free to add some water.  Steve's only complaint was that it seems like a soup that needed to be chewed because it was thicker.  Next time I make it for him I'm going to add some croutons to add the extra crunch he wanted.

Coconut Cookies

These cookies are amazing and they are VERY healthy!! There are five, yes I said five, ingredients, and no white sugar!!! Over the past year I've fallen in love with coconut...again.  It seems like every few years I remember how much I love coconut.  The last time I fell in love with coconut was when I took a vacation to Brazil and was able to drink coconut water from fresh coconuts on the beach in a remote town.  These cookies remind me of that vacation and remind me how much I love coconut!
